LMU Munich student data breach
Overview
In mid-September 2026, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich experienced a cyberattack involving the unauthorized access and copying of student enrollment master data.
The breach compromised sensitive personal and financial information, including names, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, and bank details such as IBANs. Other potentially stolen data includes health insurance numbers, student financial aid (BAföG) numbers, and previous educational qualifications. While the university noted that academic performance and examination results were not affected, the breach is estimated to impact between 52,000 and 53,000 students.
In response to the incident, LMU isolated and shut down the affected servers to prevent further data loss. The university is working with external forensic specialists and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (Landeskriminalamt) to investigate the attack and monitor the darknet for signs of the stolen data being published.
