Local infrastructure and waste management disputes in Peru
Overview
In the Sapallanga district, residents of the Castilla neighborhood intercepted five waste compactors belonging to the Chilca District Municipality. The community detained the vehicles and drivers, suspecting an attempt to illegally dump solid waste near the municipal landfill. While the Mayor of Sapallanga, Miguel Paitán, noted that waste management talks with the Mayor of Chilca had not progressed, authorities are investigating the intended destination of the waste.
In other regions, residents are protesting different municipal developments. In Subtanjalla, neighbors of the Los Huertos de San Antonio urbanization have blocked entrances to prevent machinery from expanding water and sewage networks, fearing the project will divert water from their local well. Meanwhile, in the Los Olivos sector, residents have contacted the National Police to protest the installation of a telecommunications antenna, citing concerns over its proximity to residential buildings.
