Loggerhead turtle conservation in Spain

Overview

Loggerhead turtle conservation and hatching activities have been reported across various Spanish coastal regions. In Alicante, approximately 70 hatchlings were discovered at El Torres beach in Villajoyosa, leading to the involvement of local police, the Oceanogràfic de València, and the NGO Xaloc. While most were released into the Mediterranean, ten were moved to a ‘head-starting’ program to increase survival rates. Additionally, Andalusia released 35 turtles back into the sea following recovery efforts at the Centro de Gestión del Medio Marino Andaluz.

In Dénia, a rare biological event occurred when two nests, named ‘Mona’ and ‘Diana’, hatched almost simultaneously. Monitored by technicians and volunteers from Eucrante, the event resulted in approximately 140 hatchlings reaching the sea, with the second nest showing a nearly 90% success rate.
