Logistics automation and robotics deployment in Europe

Overview

Logistics automation in Europe is expanding through the deployment of specialized robotics for returns management and warehouse operations. The startup Sereact has deployed two-armed robots to sort fashion returns for Zalando at CEVA Logistics sites in Greven, Germany, and Świebodzin, Poland. These systems utilize Sereact’s Cortex physical AI platform to identify and sort unpredictable items via a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.

Automation efforts have further scaled with Zalando and logistics provider GXO unveiling a 300 million euro technological facility in Montereau-sur-le-Jard, France. Spanning over 200,000 square meters, the site utilizes fourth-generation automation, including robotic picking cells and advanced sorting systems, to manage up to 16 million fashion items for the French and Belgian markets.

In the retail sector, testing is underway for humanoid robots to automate shelf restocking. In Denmark, the Salling Group is partnering with startup Hive Robots to test Unitree-manufactured machines in Føtex supermarkets near Copenhagen. Human operators currently guide these robots to train their AI, with the objective of achieving autonomous nighttime restocking by early 2027. These technological shifts are generally intended to reduce physical strain on workers, transitioning staff toward roles in supervision, quality control, or customer service.
