Long Beach jet ski accident and ocean rescue
Overview
On a Sunday evening, Paul Anthony Carbullido Jr., 53, and his roommate, Donna Durbay, were separated from their personal watercraft off the coast of Long Beach, California, after being knocked off by a wave. While Durbay managed to swim to a breakwater and contact a rental company, Carbullido, who cannot swim, was swept into the open ocean.
Despite wearing a life jacket, Carbullido spent approximately 12 hours adrift, paddling in the dark and cold waters. Following an overnight search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the Long Beach Fire Department, and the Long Beach Police Department, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted Carbullido at approximately 10:30 a.m. Monday, roughly 2.5 to 3 miles offshore from the Seal Beach Pier.
A rescue swimmer was lowered to retrieve him, and he was airlifted to shore. Carbullido, who reported being bruised and freezing, was hospitalized in stable condition with signs of hypothermia.
