Los Angeles illegal street racing crackdown
Overview
Law enforcement agencies conducted ‘Operation Street Sweeper’ in the Harbor Gateway area of South Los Angeles to combat illegal street racing and takeovers. The joint operation, involving over 150 officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol, utilized drone technology and intelligence to target a crowd of approximately 700 people.
The crackdown resulted in 69 arrests, including 66 for participating in or aiding street races and three for assault on an officer, battery, and obstructing police. Authorities issued roughly 570 citations, seized seven firearms, and impounded more than 200 vehicles. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the operation is ‘only the beginning’ of efforts to address illegal vehicle gatherings.
