Lotte Mart and Ocado launch Zeta Smart Center Busan
Overview
Lotte Mart and Ocado Group have launched the Zeta Smart Center Busan, an automated logistics and customer fulfilment centre in South Korea. Developed through a 200 billion won investment, the facility utilizes Ocado’s Smart Platform to integrate AI, big data, and machine learning for automated logistics.
The center features a ‘hive-and-bot’ storage system where hundreds of robots—capable of scaling up to 1,000—move goods across a grid at speeds of 4m/s. The AI-driven platform predicts demand based on variables like weather and seasonality to optimize stock placement. The facility is designed to support a 100% cold chain system, with automated freezer technology capable of operating at temperatures as low as -25°C. This supports a dawn delivery model, aiming to reach customers before 7am.
Serving approximately 4 million households in Busan, Changwon, and Gimhae, the center provides flexible delivery windows every 2 to 3 hours, up to 13 times a day. Lotte Mart’s online grocery platform, ZETTA, has launched a regional marketing campaign in the Yeongnam region featuring former professional baseball player Lee Dae-ho to promote these services. The center plans to expand its reach to Daegu and Ulsan next year, with a target of processing over 33,000 orders daily, representing an estimated annual revenue of 960 billion won.
The project aims to be environmentally efficient through the use of a fully electric vehicle fleet, energy-efficient 3D-printed bots, and solar panels intended to reduce annual carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes. The facility is also expected to create 2,000 local jobs.
