Seismic activity continued across Mexico, Central America, and Peru through late August 2026. In early August, a series of tremors struck the Pacific coast of Mexico, including magnitude 4.4 events near Mapastepec and Huixtla in Chiapas, and a magnitude 4.1 event near Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. On 7 August, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred 36 km west of Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero; authorities reported no injuries or damage. On 9 August, Guatemala’s Insivumeh reported a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near its southwestern departments, while the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) reported tremors across northern and southern Peru, prompting calls for evacuation measures. On 10 August, Mexico recorded a 4.4 magnitude earthquake southwest of Atoyac de Álvarez, Guerrero, alongside tremors in Chiapas. On 13 August, a strong earthquake struck the Pacific coast, felt in El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The USGS reported a magnitude 5.5 event, while El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources recorded a magnitude 5.7. The epicenter was near Usulután, approximately 160 km south of San Salvador; no tsunami threats or significant damage were reported. On 16 August, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Puerto Madero, Chiapas. This follows the 17 July magnitude 7.4 earthquake near the Guatemala border, which has produced over 1,690 aftershocks. On 23 August, the Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN) recorded a magnitude 4.4 earthquake off the coast of Chiapas at 04:02:54 local time. In response to these events, the Mexican Congress has called for enhanced seismic detection and early warning capabilities to address coverage gaps identified during the July earthquake. Recent data indicates On 2 September 2026, a magnitude 5.5 (or 5.6 per USGS) earthquake occurred approximately 145 km southwest of Huixtla, Chiapas, at a depth of 10 km. This event was followed by at least four significant rise in Chiapas seismic activity, with 3,326 earthquakes recorded aftershocks between January magnitudes 4.1 and June 2026, nearly doubling the figures from the same period in 2025. 4.3 near Huixtla, Ciudad Hidalgo, and Mapastepec within two hours. No immediate injuries or damage were reported.
