Overview
An unknown petroleum-like substance with a solvent odor began contaminating the Czerniejówka river in Lublin, Poland, flowing into the Bystrzyca river. Initial containment efforts by firefighters and Wody Polskie using sorbent booms were largely unsuccessful, with one barrier near the Garbarska Street pedestrian bridge failing to stop the spread. The pollution caused visible environmental damage, including dead fish and the need for veterinary intervention to remove animals from the area.
Subsequent laboratory analysis by the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (GIOŚ) identified the contaminant as mineral oil, with concentrations reaching 44.8 g/l near the Pawia Street bridge. Investigators traced the source to a storm drain outlet near Robotnicza Street, noting a yellow liquid and strong chemical odors in manholes in areas such as Majdanek. Police are investigating the illegal discharge of waste into the municipal storm sewer system to identify those responsible.
