Luis Abinader and Dominican diplomatic engagements

Overview

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has engaged in a series of international diplomatic activities focused on global stability, food security, and institutional reform. At the United Nations General Assembly, Abinader called for an end to armed conflicts and proposed three reforms for the United Nations regarding representation, peacekeeping, and support for developing nations. During a diplomatic tour in Europe, Abinader visited the Vatican and participated in the 2026 FAO World Food Forum in Rome, where the Dominican Republic was recognized for achieving the ‘Zero Hunger’ goal.

Concurrently, Foreign Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó has worked to consolidate strategic alliances. In Washington, D.C., during the U.S.-Caribbean Dialogue, Bisonó met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review the bilateral agenda and reaffirm cooperation. Bisonó proposed five strategic lines of action: energy security, economic diplomacy, protection of strategic infrastructure through cybersecurity and port security, joint responses to natural disasters and health emergencies, and intensified efforts against transnational organized crime.

Domestically, the administration has prioritized infrastructure and social programs. Vice President Raquel Peña has overseen the delivery of 836 apartments in the Ciudad Real Ecológica project in Santo Domingo Este, bringing the total units in that development to 2,024 with an investment of RD$2,134 million. Banreservas has provided significant financing for the project, totaling over RD$3,307 million for 1,808 homes to date. Other domestic achievements include the inauguration of the Orlando Martínez Primary School in Ciudad Juan Bosch, the opening of a bridge over the La Leonora River in Monseñor Nouel, the delivery of property titles in Villa Altagracia, and the completion of sanitation works for the Guajimía ravine in Santo Domingo Oeste.
