Lumpy skin disease management in Galicia

Overview

In Galicia, the Xunta de Galicia has extended preventive measures against contagious lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle for an additional month, covering the period from October 1 to October 31.

While the Consellería do Medio Rural noted there are currently no registered cases of the disease within the community, regulations remain in place to manage potential risks. These measures include restrictions on commercial cattle fairs and auctions to animals from local farms, and requirements for transport vehicles arriving from outside the region to be empty, clean, disinfected, and insect-proofed.

Furthermore, a mandatory 28-day official veterinary surveillance period applies to all cattle arriving from outside Galicia intended for live use, during which animals are held under precautionary immobilization. Authorities have clarified that the virus does not transmit to humans through direct contact or consumption.
