Macau economic and gaming sector trends

Overview

Macau’s economy and gaming sector have shown fluctuating performance throughout 2026. In September, the territory reported its lowest monthly gross gaming revenue of the year at approximately US$2.24 billion, marking a 1.2 percent year-on-year decline and a 17.5 percent decrease from August. While year-to-date revenue remains 3.2 percent higher than in 2025, it remains 15.1 percent below 2019 pre-pandemic levels. The International Monetary Fund projected GDP growth of 3.3 percent for the year, noting a heavy reliance on tourism and gaming despite a lack of broad-based domestic demand.

By October, reports indicated a significant fiscal surge, with Macau recording a budget surplus of 21.6 billion patacas for the first nine months of the year. This surplus, a 30.2 percent increase over the same period in 2025, was largely driven by a 5.9 percent rise in gaming tax revenues, which reached 74.6 billion patacas and accounted for 83 percent of all public revenue.

Concurrently, the Financial Intelligence Office noted a 7.9 percent increase in suspicious transactions within casinos, totaling 2,968 reports of potential money laundering or terrorism financing. Authorities also reported a 12.3 percent increase in gambling-associated crimes during the first nine months of the year, including a 21.3 percent rise in fraud.

Macroeconomic pressures have also emerged, with Macau’s inflation rate growing by 1.16 percent between January and September 2026, the highest accumulated increase in six years. This was primarily driven by an 11.2 percent increase in fuel costs. In response, the Monetary Authority of Macau approved an interest rate hike in September. Despite these pressures, visitor entries rose 8.5 percent year-on-year to 32.18 million in the first nine months of the year.
