Macy's department store burglary in Washington

Overview

On September 30, 21-year-old Gabriel Hideo was arrested following a burglary at a Macy’s department store in Vancouver, Washington. Store employees reported seeing a man crawling through the ceiling space above the second floor, causing damage to electrical wiring, light fixtures, and ceiling tiles.

Police evacuated the second floor and engaged in a negotiation with the suspect for over an hour. To mitigate injury risks, officers placed a mattress on the floor and used a ladder to reach the ceiling cavity. During the encounter, Hideo attempted to use the ladder to descend, but then tried to climb back into the ceiling. Officers pulled on the ladder to prevent his ascent, causing him to fall onto the mattress.

After the fall, Hideo attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police. He was taken to the Clark County Jail facing felony charges for burglary and malicious mischief.
