Madrid A-5 highway undergrounding project
Overview
The A-5 highway undergrounding project in Madrid is entering its final stages. To connect the new tunnel with the M-30 ring road, authorities have planned a total traffic closure in both directions on the A-5 highway. This intervention is expected to impact commuters traveling between Madrid and southwestern municipalities such as Alcorcón. To mitigate these disruptions, the Madrid City Council and the Community of Madrid are coordinating mobility measures, including traffic diversions via the M-40 and enhanced public transport options through the Regional Transport Consortium, EMT, and Cercanías.
Following the construction period, the underground section of the A-5 is scheduled to open to traffic on December 23. The project involves burying approximately three kilometers of the highway, featuring three lanes in each direction, including dedicated lanes for buses and high-occupancy vehicles. While vehicle circulation will resume by the end of the year, surface works will continue to transform the former highway into the Paseo Verde del Suroeste. This urban development, budgeted at 56.57 million euros, aims to create a 3.2-kilometer pedestrian corridor in the Latina district, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2028.
