Mourinho's expanded role and disciplinary shifts at Real

Overview

Following a 2-1 defeat in the Madrid derby, manager José Mourinho criticized officiating, suggesting errors have impacted Real Madrid’s standing. Atletico Madrid responded by urging others to “Stop harassing referees immediately.”

Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid on a three-season contract, with President Florentino Pérez granting him extensive authority over the club’s sporting organization, including transfer strategies and daily discipline. To rebuild the squad, Mourinho has introduced strict standards for nutrition, recovery, and discipline, alongside individualized training for players like Éder Militão and Aurélien Tchouaméni. The club continues to monitor talent such as Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch to bolster a defense that recently acquired Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen.

Amidst a performance crisis, Mourinho is preparing to implement stricter merit-based decisions. While he has maintained a supportive public stance to avoid pressure, he intends to demand higher standards following the international break. This shift may specifically affect players like Vinicius, who has been substituted early in recent matches; Mourinho is expected to move away from shielding underperforming players, requiring them instead to earn their positions through performance.

To address ongoing squad imbalances, Mourinho has expressed a desire for additional defensive and midfield signings. The club faces challenges regarding midfield control following the retirement of Toni Kroos and the transfer of Luka Modric to Milan. Although Real Madrid was reportedly interested in pursuing Rodri, the midfielder chose to join FC Barcelona, leaving a gap the club aims to fill.
