Madrid regional environmental and security initiatives

Overview

The Community of Madrid has launched two distinct regional projects. In October 2026, the government introduced a network of 60 wildlife observatories across natural areas, involving a 300,000 euro investment. This initiative, expected to be fully implemented by early 2028, focuses on ecosystem monitoring and environmental tourism through the conditioning of observation points and the provision of digital resources via QR codes.

Shortly after, the regional government announced a 17 million euro surveillance project under the ‘Pueblos con Vida’ program. Scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, this plan involves installing 1,123 cameras across 142 municipalities with fewer than 20,000 residents. The project aims to enhance public safety and road management using automatic number plate recognition technology, with data managed by local police or the Madrid 112 Municipal Coordination Centre.
