Overview

Madrid President Isabel Díaz Ayuso appointed former regional presidents Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, Esperanza Aguirre, and Cristina Cifuentes to the Legal Advisory Commission (Comisión Jurídica Asesora). This decision restores a compensation system for former presidents that had been abolished in 2015. Under this arrangement, appointees receive a net fee of 750 euros per session.

The PSOE criticized the move, suggesting the appointments aim to secure political support for a controversial property purchase in Chamberí. In response, the regional government defended the decision, with Minister of Economy, Finance, and Employment Rocío Albert stating the appointees bring “professional profiles with so much talent” to the body.

The government clarified that the appointments follow Decree 59/2025, which allows former leaders who served at least two years to join the commission. The decree also permits former presidents to receive 80% of their previous remuneration for up to 24 months, in addition to meeting indemnities and personal assistance services.
