Madrid wildfire prevention and vegetation management

Overview

The Community of Madrid has announced a one-million-euro aid program designed to assist property owners near forested areas in replacing fire-prone arizónica plants with fire-resistant varieties. This initiative aims to improve residential safety and mitigate the spread of wildfires.

To support this measure, the regional government intends to amend the Forest and Nature Protection Law. The proposed changes would make Madrid the first Spanish region to prohibit the planting of arizónicas and other resinous species within a 400-meter strip of urban-forest interfaces. This response follows a wildfire in Tres Cantos that caused one death and burned approximately 2,000 hectares.
