Mahadev betting syndicate investigation

Overview

Saurabh Chandrakar, a promoter and key accused in the Mahadev Online Book illegal betting syndicate, was extradited from Oman to India following his detention by the Royal Oman Police. The extradition was prompted by an Interpol Red Corner Notice.

Chandrakar is wanted in connection with CBI cases and a money laundering investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. Investigators allege the syndicate operated a massive illegal online betting network for sports and card games, generating large proceeds that were allegedly moved abroad via hawala channels and used to pay protection money to public servants. The scandal involves allegations of fraud and money laundering exceeding 5,000 to 6,000 crore rupees.

Following his return, a special CBI court in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, granted the Central Bureau of Investigation eight days of custodial remand for Chandrakar. While defense counsel opposed the remand by questioning the legality of the arrest and the extradition process, the CBI intends to take Chandrakar to its headquarters in Delhi for interrogation.

In a recent development, co-promoter Ravi Uppal has been arrested in Dubai. This arrest follows an Interpol Red Notice requested by Indian probe agencies. Indian authorities, including the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate, are working through diplomatic channels to secure Uppal’s extradition to India. Uppal, a native of Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, had previously been detained by UAE authorities in 2023 but was released after 45 days.
