Maharashtra drought response controversy

A drought review meeting in Nanded, Maharashtra, intended to address agricultural crises and crop loss in the Marathwada region, has triggered political controversy. The dispute arose after video footage appeared to show officials and representatives, including Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne and MP Sanjay Jadhav, being served luxury snacks such as cashews and almonds during discussions on the severe lack of rainfall.

In response to the footage, farmers in Hingoli protested by presenting plates of nuts to symbolize what they perceived as administrative insensitivity. While MP Sanjay Jadhav suggested the snacks were merely present on the table and that the controversy distracted from actual farmer issues, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the administration must remain sensitive to local circumstances and avoid such arrangements.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) further criticized the government through its mouthpiece, ‘Saamana’, accusing the administration of living in luxury while farmers face hunger, thirst, and the destruction of soybean crops. The opposition continues to highlight the drought’s impact on livestock, water supplies, and rural livelihoods.
