Maharashtra economic development and infrastructure planning
Overview
Maharashtra is pursuing a strategy to become a trillion-dollar economy to support India’s broader national growth goals. Initial development plans focus on large-scale infrastructure and specialized urban ecosystems, including the Vadhavan Port, a national data center hub, and specialized cities for innovation, sports, and commerce.
To support the ‘Viksit Maharashtra 2047’ initiative, the state government has moved to establish a dedicated Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) to address an estimated infrastructure credit requirement of ₹25 to ₹35 lakh crore over the next decade. A special tender committee has been formed to oversee this process.
Planned funding allocations include significant investments in metro expansions for Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, as well as renewable energy, grid modernization, AI innovation cities, semiconductor clusters, and EV manufacturing.
