Major fires in French towns

Overview

In early October 2026, a major fire destroyed the town hall in Gerbépal, France. The blaze completely ravaged the municipal building, though the town's archives were reportedly the only items spared. The incident led to the evacuation of eight residents and the temporary closure of local schools.

Later in the month, a violent fire struck the historic center of Bergerac in the Dordogne region. The blaze destroyed ten buildings, including 11 homes, and affected 36 other residences. Mayor Fabien Ruet described the event as the “fire of the century” for the historic center due to the loss of exceptional heritage. An investigation into the cause of the Bergerac fire has been opened by the local prosecutor.
