The Makassar City Government has initiated new waste management policies to achieve a waste-free goal by 2029. As of August 2026, residents are required to sort waste into organic, inorganic, and residue categories, with the intention that only residue is sent to landfills. In response to administrative sanctions from the Ministry of Environment, the city is ~~also working to reform its landfill operations.
