Malaria outbreaks in Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh

Overview

Multiple regions in Asia and Africa are experiencing significant malaria surges. In Ethiopia, a resurgence led to over 7.3 million confirmed cases and 1,157 deaths in 2024, marking the highest annual incidence in seven years. This increase is attributed to gaps in diagnostics, surveillance, and the use of insecticide-treated nets.

In Pakistan’s Sindh province, 117,016 cases were reported during the first nine months of 2026, with the Hyderabad and Larkana divisions recording the highest numbers. While cases are significant, health officials reported no deaths or hospitalizations for cerebral malaria in the province during that period.

Bangladesh is facing a severe epidemic that has caused more than 1,200 deaths and over 220,000 cases since March. An expert committee has warned that the outbreak reflects a deterioration in the national immunization system, noting that vaccination rates for children have fallen to 82%, below the 95% target. The committee cited delays in the 2024 malaria vaccination campaign following government service disruptions after the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
