Malawi-China economic development cooperation
Overview
Malawian officials and Chinese academics have engaged in discussions regarding the adoption of China’s economic model to drive Malawi’s industrialization and development.
During a ministerial study tour in China, Malawi’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, proposed using China’s transition from an agrarian economy to an industrial powerhouse as a blueprint. Phiri emphasized the need to manage human capital and land productivity to achieve the ‘Vision Malawi 2063’ goals, specifically aiming to shift the nation from subsistence to an export-driven economy by leveraging its ‘youth dividend.’
Following these discussions, Professor He Wenping of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences identified Malawi’s professional workforce as a significant asset for attracting Chinese manufacturing investment. Wenping suggested that the Belt and Road Initiative could help bridge infrastructure gaps in Malawi, providing the connectivity necessary for a landlocked nation to access global markets. She further recommended utilizing Malawi’s renewable energy potential to reduce import dependency and transitioning the economy from exporting raw materials to producing finished goods.
