Malawi Congress Party political apologies and fallout

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has issued public apologies regarding its conduct during its time in government and the collapse of the Tonse Alliance. These apologies, issued by party leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and spokesperson Jessie Kabwila, seek forgiveness from the public and former coalition partners.

However, the gesture has faced significant pushback. The United Transformation Movement (UTM) and the Freedom Party have rejected the apology, claiming it is too late to repair fractured relationships. UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala stated that the apology confirms grievances that the original alliance agreement, which designated parties as equal partners, was never honored. He noted that the late former Vice-President Saulos Chilima was “tormented” by the MCP leadership due to these broken promises.

Freedom Party president Khumbo Kachali also questioned the timing of the media-based apology, noting that similar outreach was not attempted during the alliance's actual negotiations. While the MCP has called for opposition unity ahead of the 2030 General Election, other political leaders remain skeptical of the party's motives.
