Malaysia-Brunei bilateral relations and haze cooperation
Overview
During the 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation in Bandar Seri Begawan, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah committed to resolving long-standing land border disputes. The leaders aim to complete surveys and demarcations by 2034, utilizing existing agreements and the watershed principle, particularly in Sarawak. It was noted that approximately 50 percent of land border issues between the two nations have already been resolved.
In addition to border negotiations, the two nations agreed to use ASEAN mechanisms to address transboundary haze, which has impacted air quality in Sarawak. Following these discussions, Malaysia has urged ASEAN member states to strengthen preparedness and monitoring under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution. This call for increased collective action comes amid rising hotspot activity driven by prolonged dry conditions and the El Niño phenomenon.
