During the 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation in Bandar Seri Begawan, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah committed to resolving long-standing land border disputes, aiming to complete surveys and demarcations by 2034. Approximately 50 percent of land border issues have already been resolved. In addition to border negotiations, the two nations agreed to use ASEAN mechanisms to address transboundary haze. Malaysia has urged ASEAN member states to strengthen preparedness under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, particularly as rising hotspot activity is driven by the El Niño phenomenon. As regional efforts intensify, Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to intensify preventive measures and early firefighting efforts. Indonesia is implementing aggressive measures, including the deployment of 1,500 additional Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel, large-capacity water-bombing helicopters, and weather modification. Malaysia has received official permission to conduct cloud seeding operations in border regions and has offered to assist Indonesia with immediate firefighting efforts if required. Recently, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for ASEAN to evaluate and improve existing mechanisms to address the growing concern of transboundary haze, noting its significant implications for public health, particularly for infants and children. While haze sources have been traced to plantation areas in Indonesia, the Prime Minister stated that Malaysia will not defend any companies involved in illegal burning practices. In Kuala Lumpur, deteriorating air quality has reduced visibility of landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers, while residents have reported throat and eye irritation. Unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings have been recorded in Sri Aman, Sarawak, as well as across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Following a proposal made during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have agreed to hold bilateral talks in Penang within the next two months.
