Malaysia financial and e-commerce fraud crackdown
Overview
The Malaysian government has initiated multiple measures to combat various forms of digital and financial fraud. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reported that over 9,600 mule accounts were targeted following a 149 percent increase in detection rates linked to the National Fraud Portal, which was introduced in April 2024.
To support these efforts, Bank Negara Malaysia is increasing cooperation with the National Scam Response Centre to accelerate the detection of stolen funds. Financial institutions are now under stricter regulatory requirements to identify and report suspicious transactions, with potential penalties for those failing to comply.
In a separate directive, the Prime Minister ordered the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to address fraud on e-commerce platforms. This crackdown aims to resolve consumer grievances regarding scams, high commission fees, and product discrepancies in digital marketplaces.
