Malaysia public university housing development
Overview
Malaysia is implementing large-scale initiatives to address student housing shortages at public universities. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched the Universiti Malaya Student Residence Project, a two-phase development on 10.3 acres intended to house 40,000 students by 2032. The project aims to mitigate high rental costs and long commutes for students.
On a national level, the government has allocated RM1.1 billion between 2021 and 2025 for the construction, upgrading, and restoration of residential colleges and hostels. This includes RM225 million dedicated to repairing existing facilities. Through public-private partnerships, 15 new residential colleges have already accommodated 45,000 students, with five more projects planned to house an additional 21,000 students. Priority for these placements is given to students from low-income (B40) families. Under Budget 2027, an additional RM800 million has been earmarked for infrastructure and equipment upgrades, supporting a goal to accommodate at least 70 percent of students by 2035.
