Malaysian citizens drug arrests abroad
Overview
In mid October, Malaysian police officials clarified reports regarding a drug smuggling arrest in Indonesia. Bukit Aman denied social media claims that a Malaysian university student was detained in Tanjung Balai for attempting to smuggle four kilograms of methamphetamine. Authorities stated the suspect was actually an Indonesian national.
By late October, Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni reported a rising trend in Malaysian citizens being detained overseas for drug-related offenses. Through September, 1,588 Malaysians were arrested abroad for drugs, accounting for nearly half of the 3,322 total Malaysian detentions overseas. Indonesia, China, and Singapore recorded the highest numbers of these arrests. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that diplomatic missions are monitoring these cases, while officials raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of security scanning at Malaysian airports.
