Malaysian civil servant ex-gratia disaster scheme
Overview
The Malaysian Treasury has detailed the “Ex-Gratia Work Disaster Scheme for Federal Public Service Officers,” which became effective on January 1, 2025. Under this scheme, the families of federal civil servants who die in work-related disasters may receive a lump-sum payment of RM20,000.
Eligible next-of-kin may also receive monthly ex-gratia payments. Widows or widowers may receive payments for life, while unmarried children are eligible until they reach age 21, marry, or complete their first degree. If a deceased officer was single and had no children, their parents may receive monthly payments for life.
The scheme does not cover contract or temporary officers who began service after June 1, 2016, nor does it cover those already receiving benefits under the Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) Employment Injury Scheme. The announcement follows the Long Lellang helicopter crash in Sarawak, which resulted in the deaths of four Ministry of Health staff members and a pilot.
