Malaysian efforts to increase parental involvement in school
Overview
Malaysian officials have increasingly called for Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) to take a more active role in student welfare and safety.
In September, Sabah’s Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk James Ratib, urged PIBG members to guide students toward safe internet use. He highlighted risks such as cyberbullying, online scams, and inappropriate content, stating that digital safety is a “shared responsibility between schools, parents, and PIBG members.”
By October, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expanded this call for parental engagement to address school bullying and student misconduct. Noting that many incidents occur outside school hours, Anwar suggested that the government could distribute certain types of aid through schools to encourage parents to visit premises and interact more frequently with teachers. He emphasized that combating physical, verbal, and cyberbullying requires both education and the cultivation of moral character.
