Malaysian military officer detention and investigation

Overview

A Malaysian military officer was detained following an incident on September 28 involving the possession of a firearm, ammunition, and a liquid suspected to be an illegal substance at a public higher education institution. Initial urine screenings indicated the officer tested positive for mitragynine, pending further laboratory analysis. Following the incident, the Malaysian Army inspected all weapon and ammunition storage facilities and confirmed that all military inventory was accounted for.

Subsequent reports identified the suspect as a man in his 30s who was apprehended in a vehicle parking area at Sungai Besi Camp on September 29. Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin noted the individual was in a six-month transition period before retiring from military service. The suspect was charged at the Jalan Duta Court on October 8 under Sections 8 and 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960. Investigations revealed the individual had three prior criminal records, including two drug-related offenses.
