The 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt is being commemorated through a series of historical, cultural, and sporting events in the Malazgirt district of Muş and Ahlat. Initial preparations for the celebrations included the establishment of thematic tents representing Turkish tribes and specialized arenas for traditional sports such as archery, mounted archery, kökbörü, and wrestling. The program, organized under the auspices of the Presidency and the Okçular Foundation, was scheduled to run from August 23 to 26. As the commemorations commenced, events at the Manzikert Battlefield Historical National Park included performances by the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mehteran Band, Quranic recitation, and prayers. Local officials, including Muş Governor Avni Çakır, described the 1071 victory under Sultan Alparslan as a historical turning point that established Anatolia as a homeland and serves as a foundation for national unity. On August 24, the celebrations expanded to include torchlight processions, flag marches, and demonstrations by Mounted Gendarmerie units. Alongside these events, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan convened a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ahlat, marking the third time the Cabinet has met in the location. During this visit, the President is expected to meet with Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli and visit the Ahlat Seljuk Square Cemetery. The Cabinet’s agenda includes the ‘Terror-Free Turkey’ initiative, specifically evaluating the disarmament and dissolution of terrorist organizations following recent legislative changes. Other discussion topics include regional security, domestic unity, economic stability, inflation, and international tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the Strait of Hormuz.
