Malazgirt anniversary and strategic security vision

Overview

The 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt was commemorated through historical and cultural events in Muş and Bitlis. During these ceremonies, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized a ‘Turkey Century’ vision and the necessity of achieving a ‘Terror-free Türkiye and Terror-free Region,’ signaling an irreversible determination to protect national security.

Building on this, the AK Party has begun detailing the framework for the ‘Terörsüz Türkiye’ (Terror-free Turkey) law. AK Party Deputy Chairman Mustafa Elitaş clarified that the proposed law is conditional upon terrorist organizations, including the PKK, KCK, YPG, SDG, and PYD, formally dissolving and verifying the laying down of arms. A committee led by the Vice President will evaluate this process before submission to the National Security Council. While individuals involved in terrorism propaganda or assistance may apply for specific benefits within a six-month window following the law’s publication in the Official Gazette, Elitaş emphasized that leaders and those who ordered killings—specifically mentioning figures in Imrali and Kandil—will be strictly excluded.

Political reactions have varied. DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan noted that the success of this process is vital for all 86 million citizens, including Kurds and Alevis, to achieve democracy and equal citizenship. MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli added that the party is acting out of patriotism rather than electoral interests to ensure the nation’s future. Regarding the political timeline, AK Party Vice President Ali İhsan Yavuz stated there are no plans for early elections, noting the next general election is scheduled for May 2028 and predicting President Erdoğan will run for re-election.
