Malieveld riots in The Hague

In September 2025, extreme right-wing riots occurred at the Malieveld in The Hague during a demonstration titled ‘Wij zijn het volk’. The protest, which featured symbols and chants associated with the Dutch Nationalist Movement (NNB), turned violent as participants attempted to march through the city, throwing fireworks, smoke bombs, and sticks at police. Acting Mayor Richard de Mos ended the demonstration after denying permission for the march, resulting in at least 24 arrests.

Following the unrest, the Den Haag City Council sought clarification from the Mayor and Aldermen regarding prior knowledge of potential violence and the handling of racist, antisemitic, neo-Nazi, and homophobic expressions.

In subsequent legal proceedings, the courts have worked to convict those involved. As of September 2026, 50 out of 54 suspects have been convicted. This includes the sentencing of three minors from Rotterdam, Rhenen, and The Hague for their roles in the violence against police officers. The sentences included community service and juvenile detention, with the defendants also ordered to pay compensation to thirteen injured officers.

Parallel to these legal outcomes, police investigations have focused on the violence and disorder during the demonstration, specifically targeting criminal discrimination, the use of face coverings, and the harassment of journalists. These investigations follow reports from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) regarding the normalization of right-wing extremism. A report titled ‘Achter de façade’ warned that radical ideologies are becoming increasingly mainstream through the use of terms such as ‘remigratie’ (remigration).
