Malta political dispute over Daphne Caruana Galizia justice

Political tensions in Malta have intensified regarding the legacy and justice sought for assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The dispute began when Jason Micallef, a Labour figure and chair of the Valletta Cultural Agency, characterized banners calling for justice for the journalist as ‘vandalism’. This prompted the Nationalist Party (PN) to demand clarification from Prime Minister Robert Abela regarding Micallef’s public role and whether the government supports such characterizations.

In response to the ongoing political friction and the government’s refusal to debate a PN motion regarding the murder inquiry, the Nationalist Party has announced plans for an omnibus bill. This proposed legislation aims to implement outstanding recommendations from the public inquiry into the murder. The reforms include criminalizing participation in mafia-style organizations, obstruction of justice, and the abuse of public office. Additionally, the PN seeks to introduce unexplained wealth orders, stronger protections against strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP), and constitutional protections for journalism to restore trust in state institutions.
