Manchester United roster and contract developments

Overview

Manchester United is managing roster changes involving defensive targets and contract negotiations with key players. The club has expressed interest in strengthening its defense, initially exploring the acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes. Subsequent reports indicate the club is preparing a £50 million bid for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ferdi Kadioglu. Brighton appears to be anticipating his departure and is currently in talks to recruit Jaouen Hadjam.

Concurrently, the future of captain Bruno Fernandes remains a central focus. While his current contract expires in 2027 with an option to extend until 2028, the club is working to secure a new agreement that could extend his stay until 2029, with a further option for an additional year. A primary challenge is determining the appropriate length of commitment for the midfielder. One potential solution being explored is an appearance-based clause that would automatically increase the contract length based on his match involvement.

Negotiations have reportedly reached a standstill. Fernandes has expressed concerns regarding the club’s ambition following a summer transfer window that failed to address key squad weaknesses. While United maintained a firm stance that Fernandes was not for sale during the August window, rejecting interest from Galatasaray, Juventus, and AC Milan, his future remains uncertain. Recent reports indicate Fernandes is seeking a new agreement that would extend his stay until 2030, a length the club is reportedly reluctant to offer. While interest from the Saudi Pro League was previously considered, Al-Hilal has reportedly ended its interest in the player after exhausting its overseas player slots.
