Mango production and market competition
Overview
Mango production and market competition in Spain and Egypt are characterized by shifting yields and rising demand. In Spain, producers in the Axarquía and Costa Tropical regions have initiated an early harvest due to high summer temperatures. While heat has led to a projected production decrease of 20% to 30% compared to the previous campaign, it has also increased the natural sugar content of the fruit. Despite lower yields per tree, cultivation area in Spain has increased by over one hundred hectares compared to 2025, with approximately 6,150 hectares currently dedicated to production. Consumer demand remains strong; data from the Ministry of Agriculture's Food Consumption Panel indicates consumption reached 49,857 tons last year, a 33.4% increase.
To bolster market presence, new promotional initiatives have been launched. In Europe, the Intertropic “Frutas con corazón” (Fruits with Heart) campaign, co-funded by the European Union, is promoting European-grown mangoes by emphasizing health benefits and culinary uses. A recent launch event in Madrid showcased the new Spanish harvest. Simultaneously, the National Mango Board in the United States has introduced the “Celebrate with Flavor that Sells” campaign to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month, targeting retail opportunities through the fruit’s cultural ties to the Latino community.
Concurrently, Egyptian producers continue to expand their presence in the European market. Egypt utilizes a strategic production window to compete when other major suppliers have lower availability, benefiting from logistical advantages and proximity to Europe. Egyptian exporters are increasingly focusing on meeting strict European standards for food safety, traceability, and sustainability to access major logistics hubs.
