Manhattan subway shooting investigation

Overview

On October 17, 2026, 26-year-old Darrel Rodríguez, a security guard and resident of University Heights in the Bronx, was fatally shot during a verbal dispute at the 53rd Street–7th Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan. The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. on a northbound E train platform as Rodríguez was returning home from work.

The NYPD reported that the altercation moved between the platform and a subway car before a suspect approached the victim, displayed a firearm, and shot him once in the chest. The suspect, described as wearing a red hooded tracksuit, a black padded vest, and a black face mask, fled the scene on foot. The NYPD stated the shooting “does not appear to be a random attack,” and the suspect remained at large for several days.

On October 22, 2026, a 17-year-old boy surrendered to the Midtown North Precinct in connection with the killing. According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, surveillance footage shows the teenager engaging in the altercation with Rodríguez before firing the weapon. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld due to his age, faces charges of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently being held in a Brooklyn juvenile detention center. The suspect’s attorney has maintained his innocence, stating the youth has no prior history of trouble.
