Manhunt for escaped murderer Gary Anderson

Overview

Gary Anderson, a convicted murderer serving a 15-year sentence for the 2018 killing of Karol Kelly, escaped custody after being granted temporary release from Maghaberry Prison on 14 September. Anderson had been released to attend his father’s funeral in Londonderry.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) launched a manhunt involving CCTV checks, patrols, and cooperation with An Garda Síochána in the Republic of Ireland.

Following the escape, Stormont Justice Minister Naomi Long faced accusations in the Assembly of misleading members regarding the incident. Long denied any intention to mislead, stating her previous comments were based on available information, and has ordered a review into the circumstances that permitted the temporary release and subsequent absconding.
