Mar del Plata Port logistics and sustainability developments
Overview
The Mar del Plata Regional Port Consortium has introduced several infrastructure and service enhancements to improve logistics and regional trade.
Initially, the port inaugurated a new digital cargo weighing scale with a 60,000-kilogram capacity. Acquired through an agreement with the Argentine Foreign Trade Single Window Execution Unit, the automated system is designed to reduce errors and streamline the recording of gross, tare, and net weights for both local and foreign trade.
Following this, the Consortium implemented a new discount scheme for truck weighing services via Resolution No. 1098/2026. Eligible users, including shipowners and frequent exporters, can access cumulative discounts of up to 30% off the standard tariff. Additionally, the port opened ‘Punto Cero’, a new cold storage plant capable of holding up to 200 40-foot containers. This facility aims to support the storage of frozen products from the southeast Buenos Aires region and reduce the necessity for long-distance truck transport.
Expanding its strategic focus, the Consortium has presented the ‘Blue Ports Initiative’ roadmap to public and private stakeholders, academic institutions, and fishing organizations. This project aims to implement sustainability criteria established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Consortium president Marcos Gutiérrez stated that the initiative seeks to establish a council to consolidate a sustainable port by balancing economic growth, social development, and environmental protection, aligning with the FAO’s 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.
