Marine ecosystem conservation in Turkey

Overview

Marine conservation and restoration efforts continue across Turkish coastal regions through localized cleaning operations and large-scale institutional programs. In Aydın, municipal divers have conducted sea floor cleaning near Güvercinada to remove ghost nets and debris. Similarly, in Bodrum, the Torba neighborhood saw a seabed cleaning operation by the Green Rangers diving team, which recovered approximately 75 kilograms of glass, plastic, and metal for recycling.

In the Saros Gulf, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry reported significant progress in combating ghost nets, having scanned 991 million square meters and removed over 3.3 million square meters of nets and 9,000 fishing tools. This effort is estimated to have saved 11 million aquatic creatures. To further support the ecosystem and diving tourism, an artificial reef project featuring underwater models of historical Edirne landmarks, such as the Selimiye Mosque, was launched near Keşan.

The Mavi Nefes Project, a collaboration between Garanti BBVA, TURMEPA, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, continues its multi-dimensional work across the Bosphorus, Marmara Sea, Antalya, Göcek, Saros Gulf, and Lake Van. As of July 2026, the project has collected 335,188 kilograms of solid waste, including 311,820 kilograms from the Bosphorus and 23,368 kilograms from Lake Van. In Göcek, the project managed over 1.9 million liters of liquid waste from 4,133 boats. The initiative also maintains a focus on habitat restoration, such as seagrass transplantation, and educational outreach to over 150,000 students and teachers.
