Marine research initiatives in the United Kingdom

Overview

The Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) has engaged in specialized research and institutional expansion regarding marine science in the United Kingdom.

Through the C-FLOOR project, researchers are using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to investigate how seabed trawling affects carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions in shelf seas. This fieldwork, conducted at the Western Channel Observatory, utilizes technology to measure sediment disturbance caused by different types of trawling gear.

Following these research efforts, the PML formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Exeter. This partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in marine research and education, focusing on ocean sustainability, microplastics, ocean carbon, and climate change impacts to establish the South West region as a global hub for marine science.
