Maritime and coastal hazards in Java

Overview

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued warnings regarding maritime and coastal risks in Java, Indonesia.

In late September 2026, warnings were issued for the southern coast of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), where waves were forecasted to reach up to four meters. Authorities advised tourists to avoid swimming or approaching the shoreline.

By late October 2026, the scope of hazards expanded. High waves between 2.5 and 4 meters were predicted for the southern waters of Yogyakarta, specifically affecting Kulon Progo, Bantul, and Gunung Kidul due to cyclonic activity and easterly winds. Additionally, coastal areas in East Java faced threats of tidal flooding (rob) between October 26 and 29. This flooding, triggered by a full moon and perigee phase, was expected to impact the Port of Surabaya, residential areas, and salt ponds across regions including Gresik, Lamongan, Tuban, Sidoarjo, Pasuruan, and Probolinggo.
