Maritime and environmental management in Mexico and South Am

Environmental and maritime management efforts have been reported in Mexico and Argentina, focusing on biodiversity and emergency response.

In the Falkland Islands, the loligo squid fishing campaign was suspended until August 24 due to climate change impacts and low biomass. This suspension affects processing hubs in Vigo, Spain. Conarpesa has since planned the acquisition of a Taiwanese squid vessel for the 2027 season to diversify production.

In Mexico, maritime initiatives include the expansion of the Tamaulipas Artificial Reef System through the sinking of the vessel ARM Seri and the decontamination of the ex-vessel Otomí. Additionally, the federal government acquired a new vessel for Quintana Roo to manage sargassum macroalgae. Conservation efforts also involved the Secretaría de Marina assisting in the release of 55 sea turtles in Campeche to protect the species from predators and illegal trafficking.

In Argentina, emergency response capabilities were bolstered by the acquisition of a new airboat by the Volunteer Firefighters of Isla del Cerrito. The equipment is intended for rescues in shallow or flooded areas, particularly to prepare for water-related emergencies linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
