Maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has deteriorated significantly due to a surge in attacks. While earlier reports noted at least ten vessels targeted, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that over 110 vessels have been hit since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began in late February, resulting in at least 24 confirmed deaths among seafarers. In late August, the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr was struck by unidentified projectiles near the Musandam Peninsula, killing two Filipino sailors. Attacks reached record levels in October. Research from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy indicates 28 verified incidents occurred in October, bringing the total to 113 attacks since the conflict began on February 28. Analysis of IMO and MarineTraffic records shows more than 30 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) have sustained damage, with 11 incidents occurring in October alone. These targeted ships represent approximately 3.5 percent of the world’s supertanker capacity. Recent ~~incidents in early October~~ escalations have seen a widening of the risk zone. The Panama-flagged tanker MT On Peace was struck on October 5, injuring twelve crew members; ten were evacuated by the Royal Air Force of Oman. Other recent strikes include the Kuwaiti-flagged MT Kazimah III and the chemical tanker Acers near Qatar, which reportedly resulted in ~~an unspecified number of casualties. Additionally,~~ the ~~Panama-flagged GEM NO. 2 was~~ sinking of two vessels. The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after being struck ~~near the United Arab Emirates, causing~~ by a ~~fire. On October 9,~~ projectile and catching fire; all 21 crew members were evacuated. While the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed ~~responsibility for an attack on~~ the ~~NV Sunshine, a large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The IRGC alleged the~~ vessel ~~was using~~ struck a naval mine on an unauthorized route, ~~triggering a massive fire in its engine room.~~ U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the ship was hit by an IRGC projectile. The ~~group warned that enforcement against unauthorized routes would extend throughout~~ Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao also sank near the ~~region~~ strait. Additionally, the Singapore-flagged GFS Giselle sustained hull damage but reached safe anchorage. Maritime security experts and ~~threatened sanctions against shipping companies cooperating with~~ the ~~United States.~~ UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) have noted a deliberate increase in the tempo of strikes targeting various vessels, including tankers and container ships.
