Maritime autonomous vessel technology advancements
Overview
Developments in maritime machine vision and multispectral imaging are enhancing the capabilities of autonomous and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).
Teledyne FLIR Marine has introduced the M364C-USV, a multispectral camera system designed for autonomous operations. By combining thermal and visible imaging, the system assists with navigation, obstacle avoidance, and surveillance in challenging conditions such as haze or low visibility. The hardware features a reinforced pan-and-tilt system for continuous-duty missions and is engineered to integrate with mission-management systems to support AI-enabled workflows. Michelle Hildyard, General Manager of Teledyne FLIR Marine, noted that such technologies are necessary to provide the “real-time situational awareness” required for safe operation in dynamic environments.
Additionally, a collaboration between SEA. AI and Anschütz is working to integrate machine vision into the Autonomics Navigation Suite. This effort aims to supplement radar and AIS sensor data with optical and thermal detection to help identify small or unlit targets, such as debris or persons in the water, which traditional sensors might miss.
