Matteo Ricci immunity revocation process
Overview
The European Parliament has moved to revoke the immunity of MEP Matteo Ricci following a request from the Pesaro Prosecutor’s Office. The legal proceedings, referred to as ‘Affidopoli’, involve an investigation into alleged irregular direct awards made by the Municipality of Pesaro during Ricci’s tenure as mayor from May 2019 to June 2024.
Initially, the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (Juri) unanimously approved a report to lift the immunity. Ricci, a member of the Democratic Party, had voluntarily waived his immunity and declined to participate in hearings to expedite the process, stating he sought to demonstrate transparency.
Following the committee’s recommendation, the European Parliament voted to revoke the immunity. This decision enables investigators to access communications, including emails and chats, between Ricci and his former collaborator, Massimiliano Santini. The Parliament noted that the judicial action was not intended to persecute Ricci or interfere with his current political mandate.
